To close an app on iPhone, follow these steps:

  • On an iPhone X or later, from the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to start the app switcher. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, double-click the Home button.
  • Swipe right or left through your most recently used apps to find the app that you want to close.  
  • Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app.

Putting your device into DFU mode is the last solution for iPhone screen flickering problem. DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest type of restore that can make low-level changes to the software running the device and fix various of persistent bugs and issues.

Be sure to back up all your important information and documents, as restoring from DFU mode will wipe all of data on the device.

1. Plug your iPhone to the computer, and launch iTunes or Finder.

2. Enter into DFU mode:

  • On iPhone 8 and newer: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Wake/Sleep button until the screen goes black. Hold down the Wake/Sleep button and Volume Down button for five seconds. Release only the Wake/Sleep button but keep  holding down Volume Down until you get a message: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode."
  • On Phone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold down both the Wake/Sleep and Volume Down buttons for 10 seconds. Release only the Side button but continue holding down Volume Down until you get a message: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode."
  • On iPhone 6s or older: Press and hold down the Wake/Sleep button and Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds. Release only the Wake/Sleep button but continue holding down Home button until you get a message: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode."

3. Follow the on-screen instructions in iTunes and restore your device. (If you're in DFU mode, nothing will be displayed on the screen)

Repair hardware issue

If none of the aforesaid methods have resolved the issue for you, you've exhausted your home-repair options, then it's likely that you have a hardware issue on iPhone that causes screen to flicker.
